OFFSITE DATA STORAGE: AN EXPLODING INDUSTRY

OFFSITE DATA STORAGE: AN EXPLODING INDUSTRY In the next few years, the companies that offer data backing services are expected to grow exponentially.  The established companies will struggle to keep ahead of their demand. In a world gone global, the data backup company is going to be huge.

The way that the world is doing business is changing, there is no denying that. Shopping online, once thought to be the stuff of science fiction is now a daily reality. Businesses are moving operations online to compete and are finding that the old ways are just too expensive to continue. Stores that do not offer at least some online presence are few to come by and largely disregarded in the long run.

The change from local to global is not just in the world of retail either – it is in every major industry. Most companies, of every type and size have moved at least a portion of their operations to online or virtual sources, including customer service, shipping and data management. An outsourced job equals reduced costs for a company. Data storage can be another major cost advantage as well.

For every file that a company keeps onsite, there must be a file cabinet and a staff person who retrieves and puts away this file. The more business that a company generates, the more files there are to keep track of. The more files there are, the bigger the space they will take up and on and on. Moving the bulk or all of the data to an offsite data facility allows the company to save time and energy, but only if it is a managed and fully secured data management service.

As more and more companies tighten their belts, there will be falling IT budgets to deal with, meaning that more of the data management services will be outsourced instead of being maintained in-house. More companies will move to cloud based services that allow them to digitally access their records without having to physically have them in their building, or even in their local area.

Moving to cloud based (Internet based) data management makes sense for a number of reasons in addition to the falling IT budgets. These include:

  • The increasing cost of both power and space for data management sites
  • Government regulations that change the ways that data can be handled, stored and what security measures must be in place.
  • Transition to mostly virtual infrastructures.

Companies are no longer huge brick buildings filled with thousands of employees. The bulk of company work is being done from home offices, or on trains and airplanes from laptop computers and hand held devices. The CEO is not sitting behind this huge mahogany desk anymore. The cost of doing business the old way is far too great and the

message is loud and clear. Get your business in the cloud or watch it fall to the ground.
