MANAGED SERVICE PROVIDERS: WHAT IS SIP TRUNKING?

6 December 2009 585 views View Comments

SIP trunking blends connections for your data and voice services into a single line. It is easier and typically less expensive than running separate connections and wiring for the two services. There are a number of benefits of using this system including an almost immediate return on investment. However, there are a few minor drawbacks and challenges that should be considered before making the change. Whether SIP trunking is right for your business needs is a question that only you and your managed services provider can adequately answer.

SIP Trunking benefits

There are several ways to get the SIP trunking, either as part of an IP phone system package or as part of customizable hybrid package that takes into account your business’s individual needs for both traditional and IP type phone systems. Some of the benefits of SIP trunking include:

  • No need for costly desktop and other types of equipment that is not as capable in the long run. The service that you choose should suggest or provide the right equipment that will give you the best service with the least amount of problems.
  • No need for managed media devices to interface between IP voice and other systems, streamlining your connection and service needs.
  • Reduction in costs from this streamlined service.
  • PSTN connections can be outsourced to a third party ending the need for long distance charges.
  • Allows point of presence in multiple cities allowing for a local phone number rather than using the standard toll free numbers (1-800, 888 etc.)
  • Allows for the use of VOIP hosted services as well as the traditional phone system as well.

 The major benefit

While you will have the costs of switching to the system and the related installation and equipment costs to pay for, experts agree that in the majority of cases the system should give the business a return on investment within the first six months of its use. The initial cost of SIP trunking is typically a fairly modest one.

 SIP Trunking challenges

Blending equipment and technologies can always present problems. New systems typically have kinks and bugs that have to be worked out. In addition, if SIP trunking is not offered by the provider you are working with, you are faced with the choice of working with two vendors or finding a new vendor who can give you all of the services that you need and want. Before you do so, it would be wise to compare the costs of the services as well as the quality of service and satisfaction before you sign a contract of any length.  Discuss the quality of service standards that you have for your company and assess realistically whether the provider can actually get you to this point or not. In addition, you should discuss the potential change with your managed services provider who can give you advice for choosing the best options, the best services and the recommended providers for these services as well.
