MANAGED SERVICE PROVIDERS: CENTRAL OFFICE OR DATA CENTER?
When setting up to meet the telecommunications needs of your company, you may look at two different choices: the central office vs. data centers for all of your equipment. Whether or not you choose the right one will be based on a number of factors including the company budget and your actual telecommunication needs. The decision can be a very complicated one for many companies and should include input from your managed services provider, who can put everything into perspective and offer suggestions. In addition, the managed services provider can make sure that you are getting the absolute best price for the services and your needs.
A data center is built to be a real data center- it is set up to deal with all of the problems that can happen anywhere, at anytime caused by nature, acts of God or the actions of man. A data center is set up to deal with fires, power outages (which can theoretically destroy your computer files and important data), acts of theft and terrorism, etc. A data center also has onsite technicians who can act as IT staff in the event of such emergencies so that there is no resetting of your computers crash at 3:00 am or worse. Another advantage of the data center is better security as well.
A central office may only have one option for equipment and telecommunication needs, which can severely limit your options. In addition, many of the carriers are now selling their open space in their central office locations so that they can help pay the rent, which may further diminish their security abilities as well. It is important that you consider these limitations when you are looking at the two options- especially if you have multiple telecommunications needs that would be best served by various technology types.
Telecommunication needs are important to every business, however the more that you rely on outside communications, the more important it will be. As a business owner, it is important to explore all available options for your company- and make the decision that will give you the most reliable and dedicated service. If you know that you will have insufficient service, lackadaisical security and other issues with a central office set up, then you need to opt for a realistic and made-for-work data center. Even if the cost of the data center is slightly higher, it may still be worth it when you factor in the additional benefits that you gain by doing so.
Most business owners are good at what they do, but may have issues about the technical aspects that are involved. Using a managed service provider allows them to focus on what they know and get advice on what they do not know as well so that they can make the right decisions and right choices. The managed services provider can also help negotiate the best price and find the best providers to meet those needs as well.
